Green beauty has been growing in popularity in recent years but what it actually is can sound confusing if you’re new to the concept. Many people think it’s easier to just buy from the same brands they’ve been buying from for years, not realizing that their business practices and ingredients may be harmful and unethical. As we move forward into greater concern for the environment and business practices that may be harming it, it’s important to think about what your shopping choices may mean for our planet’s environmental future.

Many conventional beauty brands use chemicals that may not necessarily be sustainable or even safe, all in the name of making a quick dollar and keeping prices low. While this may be good for the business, it won’t be able to withstand the test of time as resources start to become in higher demand. A frequent ingredient in conventional beauty is petrochemicals, derived from petrol. Petrol is non-sustainable, non-renewable and poses an economic issue as supplies dwindle and demand increases.

Other common ingredients include BHA and BHT, which are synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives and are known endocrine disruptors. This can mean that your hormone systems can end up all jumbled up and may influence the possibility of ending up with a hormonal disease! Coal tar dyes (or p-phenylenediamine, on the ingredient list) has been linked to cancer in humans and formaldehyde converting ingredients are rampant. With this concoction of ingredients in your beauty products, why would you ever want to put it on your body?

This is where green beauty comes in. Using sustainable and environmentally friendly ingredients like coconut, argan and avocado oil as fatty alcohols and agricultural plants like soybeans and corn to produce other oils and alcohols can have a great impact on the sustainability factor of the products you’re using. One bacteria, deinococcuss bacteria, can be sustainably created and has been used for aromas and pigments, which is great news. Just because a product is green doesn’t mean it can’t be lush and luxurious!

On top of that, by choosing to speak with your wallet and purchasefrom green brands(for example, 100% Pure or Bite Beauty) you’re doing your part in taking responsibility for the environment. The products have increased effectiveness because they’re not loaded down with unnatural preservatives and it’s an important choice for your long term health, as many products used in conventional products have been found to be carcinogenic and highly toxic. Making the best choice for your health is an important aspect of self care and let’s be real, 2020 is gonna be the year of self care for many of us!

Another benefit of buying green is that you influence more businesses to make the switch. This is great for businesses too since they’ll be improving their product quality, enhancing their brand reputation and increasing their own corporate responsibility to the planet. It’s really a win-win situation for you as the consumer and for businesses as a provider because knowing the demand is there for ethical, green products means they can go forward with changing their business practices for the better and creating a greener, more eco friendly world for all of us to live in!
